In this check-in episode, we catch up with Garry Wood, one of the dedicated athletes training for the ‘Gone Nuts’ Ultra trail race. Garry, speaking to us in November, gives an insightful update on his training progress and how he’s navigating the challenges along the way.
Garry’s training routine typically includes running three times a week and a couple of bike ride workouts. However, he recently faced a minor setback due to a couple of stitches in his left thigh, which temporarily put his running on hold. Despite this, Garry remained active, managing to do some walking and bike riding, showcasing his commitment and adaptability.
He shares a positive outlook on this hiccup, emphasising the importance of moving on from setbacks and not dwelling on what might go wrong. This attitude reflects his experience and understanding that such challenges are part of the training process.
Garry also discusses the upcoming holiday season and how it might impact his training schedule. He acknowledges that the festivities might lead to a few days off from his regular training routine but sees this as a natural part of life, not a hindrance. His approach is to plan around these events, accepting the need for flexibility and the importance of being kind to oneself during busier times.
The conversation then shifts to the broader aspects of training for an ultra-marathon, with Garry stressing the importance of building up distances gradually, remaining injury-free, and conserving energy for the race day. His strategy involves starting slower on the race day and picking up the pace later, ensuring he has enough in reserve for the final stages of the race.
